'Well, Honey,' he began, proud that his daughter was so observant of his messages. 'I'm asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon.'...
'How come He doesn't answer it?' she asked.
my dad and I had a conversation something like this many, many years ago...
it didn't go over too well...
LOL
when my dad started preaching...
he didn't preach on Sunday morning...
it was either Sunday night, Saturday night or Thursday night...
my mom worked days so sometimes she didn't go through the week...
and my brother just didn't want to go...
so my job every time that dad preached...
was to get me ready early...
then I picked out dad's clothes, socks and shoes for that time...
while he was shaving...
and have them all laid out on the bed with a tie that matched...
then I would put our bibles on the kitchen table...
when dad came out of the bathroom...
I had to hold the bottom part of the hole in the tee shirt...
so it wouldn't mess up his hair...
then I folded down his collar after he tied his tie...
then I got my coat on and waited in the kitchen...
dad would put his foot in the chair so I could tie his shoe...
and then we did the other...
because I tied prettier bows...
and then off we would go...
just dad and me...
and on the way home he would ask me about the sermon...
and I always told him straight up...
he always told people that his job was to preach...
but mine was to get the preacher to the church on time...
and I did...
every time...
my mom and dad used to sing this song on the way to church...
it was their favorite to harmonize on...

ReplyDeleteHello Ms. Tete. How fortunate I feel to receive this beautiful award from Debbie that she received from you. Great to meet you. I admire and find such inspiration in Debbie's words I find it a blessing to be included in her group of Prayer Warriors. Loved that song by, who sounds like, Charlie Pride. Loved your post. Blessings

Dear Tete,
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful time of memories for you and your dad...that was an awesome responsibility for a young girl.

What a touching post, Tete! I just love heart warming stories like yours!
ReplyDeleteEvery Sunday morning before Hubby and I left to drive to our church in the country, I always made sure he looked good. I felt it was my job as the preacher's wife, and I still enjoy my job even though he no longer preaches for a living.
Blessings,
Sandi
