I went in and found these images online...
they are from the 50s and 60s like I said before...
they were used to check the rails and transport personnel...
today, people buy them up to run the rails...
much like a motor cycle run on a day trip...
these owners do day trips when they can...
when they run, they book the track...
from point A to point B for a certain time frame...
our rails here are owned by ADM...
so there is no other traffic on them except to move grain...
so they rent the track out on a day when they are not using it...
it is always on a Sunday and we have only seen them in colder weather...
they will run 2 or 3 times during their "season"...
I am sure there are other rails they use...
they will go one way and stop and eat...
turn around and go back...
they make a day of it...
I am sure they are old retired conductors taking a look at the tracks and the views only you can see by rail...
if you have never traveled by train...
do so before they are gone...
it's a whole different world...
and the towns and cities you thought you knew so well...
will offer many fun surprises...
hope that answers all your questions...
Thanks for this post. This is ver cool and I had no idea. I bet they have a blast running the rails. I would love it.

After you said they were the cars that were used to check the tracks I knew what they were. I didn't know that people had bought them up and used them for enjoyment. Do you know I have never been on a train and I have wanted to go for years? There is a train museum here where they do rides around the train yard but that is a whole differnt experience. I think I will look into it because you are right- someday they will all be gone! hugs-Diana
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post. Love those little colorful cars!
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know my post wasn't working right. I think I fixed it now : ))
I just told my husband that I want one of those to decorate up-he just rolled his eyes!
ReplyDeleteTete, thanks for the history lesson...I love it!! i still can't believe I had never heard of this group. RR is in my blood, I love to ride a train and especially love hearing one. I can hear the one that runs from St louis and goes through Greenup, when my cousin hears one she always says " there goes Grandpa" And I think Eric should get Rebecca one!! lol
ReplyDeleteHow fun an idea to share these with all ... I want to see what Rebecca would do to decorate these!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
