just trying to beat the rain, again...

got up early...
our mornings are so pretty here...

Daphne was talking to the birds...

while I was waiting on Craig to get moving, I thought I would show you what we did yesterday...
ceramic bells from an old wind chime, from a friend who has drifted away...

you always need clothes pins...
they can fix almost anything...
that and duct tape...

the old stars off of a strand of lights...
if we can ever find a strand of white lights...
I will use them again...

and there's the cabinet on the deck...

and these are coming up from the bird seed...
have no idea what they are...
but I am going to let them go and see...
I filled the bird feeders, and still no Craig...

so I did what any normal blogger would do...
more photos...

he finally gets out there and I start to work on these...

and he crawls under the deck...
I had them make a trap door in the back so we could store stuff under there...
we went through the totes and then he stuck them back under there...

and I dug so wandering ferns and potted them...
transplanted some of them, too...

and that was it until this...
hmmmm...
looks bad, has looked bad since it was made...
our cold frames...
and they work really well...

and here is the after...
see you can turn all the blocks so you can't see the ends of them...
these are from a house that was torn down just down the street...
they are vintage salt glazed and seem to be hand made...
they are not all the same size...
close, but not exact...
the old windows came from the same house...
cold frames, if you do not know, are used to house plants in the early spring...
much like a green house...
the salt glaze blocks absorb and hold heat very well...
the windows let the sunlight in...
and plants bought too early or started early...
are safe from frost and freeze...
they also grow faster in there...

I wanted to show you this crazy columbine I bought last year...
it has 2 different colors on it...
a very pale lavender...

and a deep, dark purple...

kind of off...
like me...

after the cold frame was reworked...
we took the rest of the blocks and lined the front of the veggie garden...

see, now the mower can't throw grass in there...
in the back corners, are going to be little hills...
for watermelons...
got the seed today...

and they have been working the field behind us today...
sprayed it this morning and we had to come in for about an hour...

and they planted this afternoon...
that's corn going in the ground right there...

now that's a planter...
18 row...
things have sure changed since I was a kid...
we thought farmers were uppity if they had an 8 row one...
LOL
well, its been a long day and I am pupt...
we got a bad storm heading this way...
so I am going to check the radar again...
hopefully, we can sleep tonight...

got to play in some dirt...

one very windy day dried things out around here...
I was so surprised to find dirt that wouldn't make a mud pie when I transplanted the radishes...

thinned them out of here...

and stuck them in here...
and then we had to water them...
that's a first for this year...
watering?

the rose bushes are so close to being full of blooms...

Elmer is still not sure about outside...
he is afraid of everything...

this was all transplanted last year and some new plants added...

we walked to the end of our street for a look at one of the fields...
wild mustard has taken over...

you can see how the mud dried...
from standing water...

but the farmers are just getting into the fields...
with more rain coming in on Thursday, they may not have much time...

by the weekend, the iris will be in full bloom...

the nights have been pretty cool around here...
frosted out in the open the night before...

but the days are warmer and the clematis exploded in color yesterday...

I can see these out the living room window...

yeah, I am getting more of these...

the flags are tall this year...

really filling in...
the beds are so thick...
might be a good year to thin out and make new beds...
move things around a bit and line some rows...
have a fun day!
;)

its growing...

our carrots and radishes...
the radishes need transplanting now, but the carrots need to grow a bit more...

mums coming up...

and that crazy dusty miller...
this is the 3rd year on these plants...
I was so tired of them, I cut them off last fall, thinking that would be the end of them...
they are not where I want them to be, so guess they will be moving...

lavender...
I only have 2 of these plants in 2 different beds...

lilies...
some old and some bought last year...

and of course the columbine...

I need to go out and count how many of these plants we have now...

lost almost all of them in the flood 5 years ago...
so we had to start over, almost...
I did lose all my varieties...
this was the only one to hang on...

and we have shade!
can you believe it?
we didn't need it today, but will later in the week...

this is going to explode in color soon...

Bebe keeping and eye on the cats as they romp around the yard...
he has been a victim to drive bys...
so he is a bit wary when they go whacko...
he had a bad few days, but seems to be back to normal...

and the field behind us is still untouched...
I hope the farmers are able to get going soon...
that will be another week of allergies when they do...
this week the cotton wood decided to shed, and my eyes watered for days...
its still snowing fuzz here...
I am hoping it quits in a couple days...
the fluff is on everything...
I have been going from one allergy to the next with no gap in between...
and winter clothes to summer clothes...
from one day to the next...
just another crazy spring on the prairie...

the meaning of useless...

the day started off with a trip to the local grocery store and a drive to the deli...
lunch and then tomato planting...
I dug the first hole, and sat down and planted those...
while DH complained about me hurting myself, so he dug the next hole while I watched...

I told Craig to plant the next ones, since DH has problems getting up and down anymore...
so he informed me that I was treating him like he was useless...

seriously?

so I just sat there and watched the rest of the planting and dandy lion digging...
taken photos of the cats...

and trying to have a good time...

can you believe how tall things are today?
that's a super large mailbox hiding in there...

the mood had changed and it was no longer fun doing what I look forward to the most...
so I came inside...
because he kept using the word 'useless'...
just because there is one thing around here he has trouble doing...
getting up and down...

there are many things I cannot do anymore...
and I cannot do anything like I used to...
so, how do really useless people spend and beautiful afternoon?
I came in, played on the internet and took a nap...
;)
he's still pouting...
but he weeded all the day lilies in the south yard and he's doing the trim mowing now...
wish I were that useless...

a bit of yesterday...

clematis...
one of my favorite spring flowers here...

my purple columbine...

and my old fashioned columbine...

I haven't seen the humming birds in them yet, buts its been a little chilly some days...

peonies are showing their color, but the blooming is still s couple weeks away...

columbine, lilies, a daisy and lilac...

everything is really green here...
the ever greens that were suffering in the drought last year have tons of new growth on them...

got up and hit the grocery store this morning and then did a deli run...
working on a light lunch and heading outside...
got up to gray skies and in the 60s...
but the sun came out and its warming up...

we are going to mud in the tomatoes and I have some radishes to transplant...
you all have a good day and if I get some dirty photos for you...
I will post them later...
;)
